Jeff Baij is an artist all about over stimulation. I think the simple fact that Baij places everything that he works on on his blog is very inspiring and courageous. Baij is obviously one of those people who makes artwork everyday which is a great practice and he unlike most of us, simple choices to show everyone most of his artwork, the good, the bad, and the ugly. This lack of editing can be seen as a negative sometimes but since this jumbling of all of his artwork happens on his blog I think he is completely entitled to place anything and everything he wants on there to get a reaction. In doing so, he is also making a commentary on the over stimulation and volume of information on the internet. As a generation our ability to edit, in general, is far less because we are always inundated with so much media that it becomes almost impossible to tell what the good stuff is, where the truth is, etc. These are all points that i think are very well addressed in Baij artistic style. I also think that the simple fact that Baij makes so much artwork gives much more quality to his work. I believe there is quality in the quantity because of the meaning behind it and because of the dedication it takes to maintain the constant creating and outsourcing of his artwork.
I personally, really enjoyed his video pieces/ animation pieces a lot more than his other artwork. I thought his videos were interesting and often did tell a story and showed some type of technical skill. His other work, like the animals made of different textures i didn’t find at all stimulating. I found them boring and amateur in technique and meaning. I did like his photographs of the lighted letters creating words. I like the process he took creating the words and like how it forced the viewer to really become engaged in the piece to find out what the letters meant. All in all I think there is a lot of bad on Jeff Baij’s website however I think there is also some good, even some possible great stuff. And if an artist can achieve something great, I would gather to say they are pretty successful.
